BMI to sponsor upcoming USC film scoring session at FOX or Warner Bros.

Brian King recently met with Doreen Ringer-Ross, VP of Film and Television Music for BMI, to discuss a partnership with BMI and the USC SMPTV program. In this setting, BMI has provided partial funding for one of our scoring sessions scheduled for spring of 2009. The session focuses on an assignment from USC instructor and BMI composer, Christopher Young. The students will have the unique opportunity to create a new score, as a class, for one of Chris’ past film projects. The assignment will be mentored, in part, by the director of the film. Past projects have included;
The Man Who Knew Too Little with director, Jon Amiel
Hellbound with director, Clive Barker
The Fly II with director, Chris Wallas

The session will take place at either the Newman Scoring Stage at FOX studios or the Eastwood Stage at Warner Bros. Peter Rotter of Decrescent-Rotter will contract the 40 piece orchestra for the date. Bobby Fernandez will mix.

archival piece - Nuno Malo, USC class of 2001

From 1998 - 2001, the USC scoring program had numerous opportunities to record with the USC Symphony Orchestra in Bovard Auditorium on the campus of USC. As of 2002, I was able to book these sessions with either Paramount Studio Stage “M” or the Eastwood Stage at Warner Bros. These sessions bring players and composers [...]

CTAN 495 Experimental Video to be renamed “Visual Music”

The class was so successful that Mike Patterson decided to rename the course, “Visual Music”. This clearly demonstrates the impact music has on the video artist’s overall creative concept. Here’s a copy of the program from the screening from the final projects. Congratulations to SMPTV students, Nathan Blume, Ludwig Gorannson, Robert Gross, and Igor Nemirovsky [...]

Experimental Video course invites collaboration

In this case, SMPTV student composer, Ludwig Gorannson took part in a course typically designed for filmmakers only. Here’s a sample of just one of the many projects that are a direct result of this kind of collaboration between composer and filmmaker.

SMPTV composer, Eugene Mishustin, captures the Hollywood sound

In this original score by Eugene Mishustin, he makes the most of the 70 piece orchestra at Warner Bros. Eastwood Stage. The film is “Timeline” and in this case, he has rescored the closing scene of the film.

SMPTV student Henri Wilkinson had a chance to work closely with Chris Young as he created this score for an action scene in Spiderman 3. It was recorded live at Warner Bros. Eastwood Scoring Stage with a 70 piece orchestra - contracted by Decrescent-Rotter
